This has scalated for me in 11.10...
now a password is required even when I awake from suspend upon opening the
lid.
Ouch. This is annoying.

Title:
screen locks after suspend despite gconf-editor setting

Status in “gnome-power-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

  1. In gconf-editor, uncheck the box /apps/gnome-power-manager/lock_on_suspend.
  2. use the power button in the upper corner of unity to choose suspend.
  3. turn the computer back on.

See that the setting is ignored, i.e. the screen is locked.

Note that if you use the "Shut Down the Computer" dialogue instead to
suspend the machine, it is not locked upon resuming.
