A further observation: When doing a cold startup with the headphones plugged in, the Sound panel only showed the Speakers. Operating the Test Sound button produced the Left and Right channel sounds in the headphones. When disconnecting the headphones and re-inserting their plug, the Headphones did appear in the Sound panel. Removing the plug once more allowed the Test Sound button sounds to be played through the speakers as expected.
