This problem also affects Ubuntu 14.04 AMD 64. I recently upgraded the kernel to 3.13.0-45. Nvidia module is not built: there is no /var/lib/dkms/nvidia-331/331.113/3.13.0-45-generic. No errors reported in the apt logs. As a result the desktop screen is blank.
