Same issue for me, also on photosmart 7450. I managed to get one test page out of the printer and that's it. What is happening is that the printer disappears from the usb channel. Why it does that I do not know but the computer really cannot communicate to the printer anymore when it is gone. I tried to plug it in on different usb ports but that does not resolve anything.
One other strange thing is that it always says "Pen cleaning in progress" just after switching it on and that status message does not go away. Note that I did install new cartridges with all these issues and was able to get 1 test page out which printed nicely. Another thing is the cartridge for color always indicates as not installed althoug it is and with the test page, it used the colors. I kicked out Windows but a bit too soon I believe... Desparate for a fix... me@Lapper:~$ lsusb Bus 002 Device 041: ID 03f0:b802 Hewlett-Packard PhotoSmart 7400 series Bus 002 Device 003: ID 046d:c03d Logitech, Inc. Status in HP Linux Imaging and Printing: New Status in hplip package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: My HP photosmart 7450 printer has been showing some communication problems since using Hardy. Prior to this, I've been running Debian stable on exactly the same hardware without any printer problems. The symptoms are: printer is detected as photosmart 7400 & appears to install correctly. I can sometimes initially print one or two pages, then it locks up completely, I get a pop-up notice on the top panel about printer supplies low (although it isn't). At this point, the printer firmware appears to have hung - it doesn't respond to front-panel button presses & the only way to get it to respond is to pull the power supply for a few seconds. On reconnecting, it sometimes prints, sometimes doesn't. I've tried uninstalling the hplip package and installing the latest version (2.8.5) from the hp website. It didn't make any difference, the symptoms are unchanged. It looks like there's another user with the same problem: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=809469&highlight=photosmart+7450 Following the advice from the debugging printer problems page: mike@badger:~$ lsmod |grep usb usb_storage 73664 0 libusual 19108 1 usb_storage usblp 15872 0 usbhid 31872 0 hid 38784 1 usbhid usbcore 146028 8 usb_storage,libusual,usblp,usbhid,ehci_hcd,uhci_hcd scsi_mod 151436 5 usb_storage,sg,sr_mod,sd_mod,libata mike@badger:~$ tail -f /var/log/messages Jun 20 20:24:37 badger kernel: [ 476.217222] scsi 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Sense not available.
