I also have this problem. The interesting thing is that starting lightdm again seems to work.
What I did: <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<F1> login using username and password sudo start lightdm && logout This would bring up lightdm just like it should. I have no idea why it would specifically during boot. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to lightdm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/811355 Title: Oneiric won't start x on boot up Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Bug description: Upgrade to 11.10 Alphafrom 11.04. On reboot hung at "Checking Battery State". It looked as though x was trying to start but not succeeding. Rebooted using Recovery mode. Found the Low Graphics option was not there. Ran Broken Packages option which replaced a lot of stuff, then Continue Normal Boot. Was dropped to command prompt to login. After logging in tried "startx". Looked as though x was starting then stopped at screen with error message box "Failed to load session "Gnome" and a logout button which dropped me back to command prompt.
