It connects to live.mozillamessaging.com to display the start page in
the message pane, that's all (or the "what's new" page if you've just
upgraded). You can disable that in the preferences if you think it's a
privacy concern

Title:
  Phones home at startup

Status in “thunderbird” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
Due to problems with my previous MUA of choice, I've recently started
using Thunderbird again. Today it started before the network was up
and so I got the attached screen shot. I understand
live.mozillamessaging.com is used to support account configuration,
but I don't think there is any legitimate purpose for phoning home
  when the application is started.
