Opening the lid again, one never sees the gnome-screensaver password input dialog appear. even after furiously hitting any random key or moving the trackpad. Switching to a vcons doesn't produce visual content either, so the only "cure" is to hit ctrl-alt-del while in the vcons to reboot the laptop.
