Same problem here with HP printer "HP Color LaserJet MFP M476dn" on Linux Mint 17 (based Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS).
Scanning duplex is working well in Xsane and gscan2pdf, but with Simple Scan only the front side of each page is scanned. Additional info: gscan2pdf is working with interface "libsane-perl" and scanimage.
