I have upgraded to the official release of 11.10 and this problem does not appear. I think it can now be closed.

Status in “gdm” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Binary package hint: gdm Description: Ubuntu Natty (development branch) Release: 11.04 gdm: Installed: 2.32.0-0ubuntu14 Candidate: 2.32.0-0ubuntu14 Version table: *** 2.32.0-0ubuntu14 0 500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status After today's rather large update using recovery boot (update-manager known to be sick), proceeded to regular terminal login and called gdm using 'sudo gdm'. Login was OK. However, some failure, perhaps with restoring panels caused large black areas to appear on the desktop which could not be reversed. Mousing around made them worse. This is being submitted from low-graphics mode. That update was so large it is hard to pin this down, and I hope you are able to say what happened. BTW, since the update is after the Beta release date, can I consider this the beta now or is it still alpha?
