The version of Lubuntu is wily. This old laptop was upgrade from 14.04 which had a working display until I updated it recently.
The screenshot does not show how the display actually looks, if required I can try to take a picture of the laptop... Debian Jessie display is fine! Attached are the following files: xorg.conf used on Debian and earlier version of Ubuntu (14.04) and tried on wily. Xorg.0.log without an xorg.conf file on wily.
