I realize it's not a bug but a feature request, still I'd very much like it to
be implemented.
It's easy to forget running gedit with sudo when trying to create new files in
directories you don't have write rights to. I believe many users new to Ubuntu
can relate. This feature would be a great step towards more usability. Another
possibility would be a warning if you are editing a file you don't have write
access to.

Title:
gedit does not elevate privileges while it's being launched

Status in gedit package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When I run gedit as normal user and try to change some file inside a
system (for example, /etc/fstab) it doesn't allow me to write changes
directly to that file. Instead, I can save file in my home directory,
then move it on the right place with sudo mv. Other option is to copy
it's content inside clipboard, relaunch gedit as root, then paste and
  save in appropriate place.

These paths are not convenient, because I have to do a lot of
unnecessary work, searching for the file twice or typing it's location
into terminal. Imagine a situation when file cannot be saved and gedit
asks for root password and escalates privileges automatically so we
can now write directly to that file. Kedit can do this. Can we embed
  such functionality inside gedit?
