I had the same problem and found this solution: 1) Click the Ubuntu logo start icon and bring up the dash. 2) Type "menu" on the search field and open the "Main Menu" application. 3) On the "Menus:" panel on the left click on "Sound and Video" at the bottom. 4) On the "Items:" panel on the right right-click on the Movie Player (Totem) icon and chose "Revert to original" 5) Close the "main Menu" application.
Now it should work again. The catch is that you have again just one window to play videos.
