The login still does not work upgrading from 1.24 to 1.3x. It was 1.31 and it is 1.38 now. I give up.
Finally I hided my existing default under .thunderbird and installed 1.38.3 effectively as new. Then recreated the accounts and login works. Moved the local folders back into the new default to keep archives. The bug report has been open long enough. I don't think anyone would be interested in troubleshooting what was wrong with the upgrade. Please close.
