To reproduce, open a new file in gedit, change the syntax highlighting option to JavaScript, and enter the following line: var x = 1 / 2, y = 1 / 2; Everything between the two slashes is highlighted like a regex. It's true that in JavaScript regexes are delimited by two slashes, but that's not what's happening here.
