I ended up by mistake getting the wrong ownership of the home folder. From the login screen, when I choose the pre-existing user and type in the password, the screen goes blank as though it's going to loog in, but then it bounced right back to the log in screen with no error message. The problem is that there's no indication of what went wrong, and there should be.
