I wrongly associated this error with the following bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/poppler-data/+bug/1438494, however cliddell corrected me and also directly pointed to his committed patch: http://git.ghostscript.com/?p=ghostpdl.git;a=commitdiff;h=668406a5 which should fix this issue. With version 9.18 from http://www.ghostscript.com/download/gsdnld.html its working flawlessly.
