Same problem here, running 14.04 with flashback-metacity. When needed, as a workaround, I'm changing gnome-calculator config using dconf as indicated below, but I certainly would not consider this convenient.
$ dconf write /org/gnome/calculator/button-mode "'basic'"; gnome-calculator $ dconf write /org/gnome/calculator/button-mode "'advanced'"; gnome-calculator $ dconf write /org/gnome/calculator/button-mode "'programming'"; gnome-calculator $ dconf write /org/gnome/calculator/button-mode "'financial'"; gnome-calculator -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-calculator in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1366221 Title: gnome-calculator does not show application menu anywhere Status in gnome-calculator package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: gnome-calculator no longer offers, as of 14.04, an application menu. It used to be there before the upgrade, in 12.04. So switching between scientific and engineering now requires me to use dconf-editor. Note that I did check hovering menu line, application title bar, and thereabouts, to no avail. This application is now useless...
