This is still an issue with Trusty (14.04.3). I have found that the controls do not show up when using the trackpad, but do work if you swipe on a touch screen. Once the controls are up, moving the mouse with the trackpad keeps them visible, but after they disappear from inactivity, moving the trackpad will not bring the controls back up.

Moving the mouse used to bring up a navigation area at the bottom of the window containing the progress bar and basic player controls such as pause and play. Now moving the mouse doesn't trigger any action at all and the is no way to bring up the navigation area. Right clicking does bring up the context menu but left clicking doesn't even stop the movie. Also the mouse pointer is not visible at all in full screen mode.
