After upgrading to 11.10 running kernel 3.0.0-12-generic the issue still exists.

However, in order to actually get the system to power down after hibernate is done writing state to disk I must hold the power button on the laptop until the computer shuts off. That is, I wait until the HDD notification light has stopped blinking and power down manually. When I turn the comp. back on, hibernate resumes without a hitch.
