Yes, that's correct. There are a large number of critical errors that LightDM detects and quits if they occur.

It also doesn't provide any diagnostics on that console for anyone remotely trying to help them. Ideally it should on failure: 1) Switch to vt with a login prompt 2) Output a line or two saying that it knows lightdm failed - preferably pointing them at the log file. 3) If it can have a pattern to check for the X server itself having failed and being the reason lightdm failed then it would be useful to display it.
