michelf41, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.
As per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases, Ubuntu 12.10 is EOL as of May
16, 2014.
Is this reproducible in a supported release?

Title:
boot stops on Asus Eee x101CH with (l)ubuntu 12.10
Status in mesa package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
After update booting stops at "Starting configure virtual network
devices [OK]
I noticed that one or two weeks ago, did a complete reinstallation of
Lubuntu 12.10 alpha 3 that worked fine until today when I attempted an
update hoping the bug had been fixed in between.
Making a detour via safe mode and resume, boot stops with
"Stopping System V runlevel compatibility [OK]"
"Starting [OK]"
Note that the first time booting ended with the command line and I
could not do anything with it. (I am a layman)
Very annoying !
Thanks for your attention
Michel
