Same issue in French.
I just filled bug #1554731 and marked it as a duplicate of this one.
The French word "cœur" ("hearts" in English) is displayed "c?ur" on screen when
in first position in the sentence.
"œ" is a special character in French.

question marks. (see attached screenshots)

displayed correctly.
