Some insights on this.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu on a Packard Bell EasyNote LJ65. This
laptop as a GMA4500 M chip.

After some research, I saw that from kernel with version above
2.6.38_rc8 (in other words, version of Ubuntu higher than 10.10), a
regression did happen causing no backlight on the screen.

It's not possible to use the Live CD to try or install since the screen remains 
black.
Some workarounds are available but it'd be good so solve the root cause of this 
problem.

  cant change laptop brightness

Status in gnome-power-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  can`t change laptop brightness, software controls in settings center doesnt 
have any effect. 
  while typeing on keyboard the status of the screen brightness changes [top 
right] but aktual brightness does not change.
  laptop dell vostro 3700. (yes, the one on the ubuntu homepage)

  using ubuntu 11.10 fresh install.
