Public bug reported:

I'm working on an i686 machine with a VIA C7-D processor and VIA PM400
graphics chipset. The machine runs Wily (15.10). The machine is
available at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AXR2KBQ.

Xserver crashes at boot because the downlevel driver does not handle the
PM400 chipset very well. The Free Desktop folks are aware of the issue,
and Kev Brace of the OpenChrome project fixed the driver.

Freedesktop announced the availability of OpenChrome Version 0.3.4
(http://lists.debian.org/debian-x/2016/02/msg00114.html). I confirmed
the fix on this machine with Wily (15.10) by manually installing the
patch (http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/openchrome-
users/2016-February/007234.html).

The updated OpenChrome 0.3.4 driver was taken by Debian at
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=814682.

The updated OpenChrome 0.3.4 driver is not yet available in Ubuntu.
Please pick-up the updated OpenChrome 0.3.4 driver.

Description-en: X.Org X server -- VIA display driver
OpenChrome is a project for the development of free and open-source drivers
for the VIA UniChrome video chipsets.
 .
Originally called the 'snapshot' release, since it was a snapshot of an
experimental branch of the unichrome cvs code, this is a continued development
of the open source unichrome driver (from http://unichrome.sf.net) which
also incorporates support for the unichrome-pro chipsets.
 .
Support for hardware acceleration (XvMC) for all chipsets has subsequently
been ripped out of the unichrome.sf.net driver. Therefore your only option if
you wish to make use of the acceleration features of your VIA chip with free
and open-source drivers is to use this version of the driver.
