boots to a black screen with a cursor

Bug description:
After the splash screen on boot, I get taken to a black screen which
has an active cursor.
I have to switch to tty1 (or another tty) and run the following:
sudo service lightdm restart
Then I get taken to the lightdm login screen.
I'm not sure why it isn't starting properly, happy to help diagnose
though.
