Just leaving a comment that I am still suffering from this problem described in the title under Gnome-shell 3.16.4. After a while the sound buttons (and only the sound buttons) stop working. None of the other issues that are described as related above (Light not working from the menu, or the delay in loading the Power settings) apply, just the sound buttons. Doing Alt-F2 + r fixes the problem (at least for a while).
