Launching 'FTL: Faster Than Light' with r600g driver crashes xorg

Bug description:
When using open source r600g driver on amd64 architecture, trying to
launch FTL: Faster Than Light game in Steam completely crashes the
xorg server. lightdm then restarts taking you back to the login
screen.
FTL: Faster Than Light is part of the current Humble Bundle 9 set of
games.
