I currently run Gedit 2.30.2 (latest stable release) compiled from source in Ubuntu 11.10 and I don't have this problem now. If I remember correctly, with Ubuntu 10.04 the close icon was only cut off in the default Raleigh theme.

This larger icon is also cut off on the right side (see attached screenshot). As a comparison, Firefox uses the larger version of the icon but it is not cut off. I use Ubuntu 10.04 with the Blackbox window manager and the default GTK theme.
