I suggest get rid off xsane, simple-scan and gscan2pdf using sudo apt purge xsane etc.
Scanimage does a good job. Use sane-find-scanner to find the scanner. Use scanimage -L to find what make the scanner is. Use scanimage -A to find which parameters go with the scanner you have. Use SANE_DEBUG_DLL=5 scanimage -L to do a bit of debugging, if needed. Somehow simple-scan works on some other machines with Ubuntu 16.04. ** Attachment added: "This attachment gives the output for the commands given above." https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sane-backends/+bug/1587853/+attachment/4688227/+files/scanner.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to sane-backends in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1587853 Title: Canon Lide 110 scanner does not work with xsane, simple scan, gscan2pdf but works with vuescan Status in sane-backends package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I have a Canon Lide 110 scanner which is detected in scanimage -L and sane-find-scanner. It gets stuck at the finishing end and does not return to the starting end with xsane, simple scan and gscan2pdf. However it works admirably well with vuescan. Even though the light is stuck at the finishing end, on starting vuescan the light returns to the starting end and the scanning is smooth with vuescan. The problem continues with xsane, simple scan and gscan2pdf, however. It seems to me to be a sane backend problem. I had stated this problem before and thought that the problem was solved. But it has not been solved.
