Hi, thank you for taking your time to report this bug and helping to
make Ubuntu better.
MySQL is a hard, non-removable dependency for akonadi because akonadi does not
have a runtime backend detection mechanism. So if for whatever reason the mysql
backend would not be installed by default or be replaced with a different
backend, akonadi will show an error message saying that the MySQL backend is
not functional. A common user is given no hint what is actually wrong, and most
don't even know what MySQL even is.
If you prefer to use a different akonadi backend, feel free to install one, but
the core mysql packages cannot be removed to guarantee that akonadi will work
fine in its default configuration.

Title:
Akonadi depends on mysql but may be used with other backends
Status in akonadi package in Ubuntu:
Won't Fix
Bug description:
Package akonadi-server lists akonadi-backend-mysql as a dependency,
but suggests akonadi-backend-postgresql and akonadi-backend-sqlite as
alternative backends. Shouldn't they be all dependencies in OR?
Actually you can't remove the mysql backend even if postgres or sqlite
are installed.
