This should be fixed in version 1.1.9 and later, which is part of wily
and later.

Bug description:
  In Ubuntu 14.04, running "mtp-detect" with a plugged 4.4.4 Android
  smartphone outputs the following:

    Unable to open ~/.mtpz-data for reading, MTPZ disabled.libmtp
  version: 1.1.6

  The upstream bug, already fixed, is the following:
  http://sourceforge.net/p/libmtp/bugs/968/ (I tried to add it as the
  Upstream Bug URL, but Launchpad does not recognize the URL as some bug
  tracker...)
