I have run into this several time since upgrading to Oneiric and each time it requires me to reinstall nvidia-current and nvidia-173. It's extremely frustrating as this is a laptop I use as my primary work system. It's a lenovo w510 with:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT216 [Quadro FX 880M] (rev a2) running 11.10 64bit. Here's hoping someone can find this and crush it fast.
