Here are some more observations:

After the password dialog appeared, duplicity says:

Preparing ...
Scanning ...

asks for the password again.

One can break this loop only by cancelling the backup.

Title:
  duplicity ignores entered password

Status in duplicity package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Duplicity regularly asks for a password to encode the backup data.
This used to work fine but somehow with the latest kernel update it seems to
break.
Duplicity asks for the password repetitively but does not continue to backup
data.
This occurs during delta backups only.

I have deleted the password in the seahorse container and entered it
  again to no avail.
