I have HP EliteBook 8440P. I can get additional battery out and nothing happens, it works on Primary battery and says it has only 1:35 hours remaining. When I add additional battery back in, it says it is now discharging Travel battery and Primary is in state Charged. So, yes, I can work only on Primary battery and connect/disconnect second battery online. It doesn't go to suspend/hibernate. But when Travel battery is discharged, my system says it will now go into suspend mode.
