Public bug reported:

Upgraded from 14.04 LTS to 16.04 LTS and had error message about tex-
common; later in the upgrade process it said it was aborting the
installation.

Ubuntu stopped functioning in many ways - lost wifi and could not
restart via menu and resorted to a hard-shutdown, which appears to have
sorted them out now.

Not sure if that behaviour was anything to do with tex-common, but that
was the only error message. Never submitted a bug report before, so not
sure what else to put it here.
