Thank you for your bug report, the purpose of -common packages is to ship files that are identic on different architectures (sparing mirror space since that way they are in 1 common archive rather than included 1 time for each build) ... what's your issue with having that -common installed?
** Changed in: gnome-session (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Low -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-session in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1622772 Title: gnome-session-properties icons and .desktop file should be moved to gnome-session-bin Status in gnome-session package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: gnome-session-bin package includes gnome-session-properties binary. However, gnome-session-properties's .desktop file and icons are all in gnome-session-common, which is the only reason I have gnome-session-common installed in my system. So I think those files should be restructured differently, possibly, moved to gnome-session-bin package.
