Urgh. Turns out that I had an xorg.conf that was just confusing enough
for Xorg to fail to load the radeon driver. Now that I've got rid of
that it autoloads radeon and everything is groovy.

Title:
Modesetting picks incorrect card as output master
Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
I have a rather strange setup, with an nvidia and AMD card, both with
connected displays. (Connected to the same monitors, in fact).
The AMD card is the EFI primary card, and is what drives the kernel
framebuffer. This is correct; it's the one that's plugged into both
monitors.
modesetting, for soume reason, picks the nvidia card as the output
master and the AMD card as an output slave. This is good, in that it
can drive both my monitors, and bad in that rendering on the nvidia
card is literally seconds-per-frame (presumably it lacks reclocking
support).
