I installed LibreOffice 5.2 from the libreoffice/ppa PPA, and that seems to fix the bug. However, I obviously can't tell whether the bug is fixed in Ubuntu proper, unless the packages from the PPA are adopted precisely as-is!

I can't find any way to change this: changing the symbol style has no effect, and I can't find anything about this problem by googling. I attach a screenshot of the Format dialog from Calc to show the problem.
