I am still having problems. I tried removing, purging & reinstalling Nautilus; no joy.
Then I found this bug and tried: * Removing ~/.config/nautilus This worked. I have desktop icons again and a file manager. However, Nautilus has just one menu, titled "Files", and it contains no entries.
