This is perhaps a perfect example of the issue many people have, and which people I've converted to Ubuntu complain about (to me), on a regular basis...
Reading the history of this bug, it seems that a consensus was reached on the correct solution, in 2010, but we are fast approaching 2017 and nothing has changed.
