Okay, I enabled the "Processor microcode firmware for AMD CPUs from
amd64-microcode (proprietary)" and performance has improved somewhat,
for both the Dashboard and streaming video playback (both embedded video
and fullscreen video).

Dashboard still showing some garbage output, when I put in search terms,
and the display does not tidy up after showing me the relevant icons;
but searched icons do appear and Dashboard is usable. Again, my legacy
laptop's display problem is not really solved yet.

  Typing in Dashboard search creates garbage on screen, running nouveau
  driver. After considerable lag, the icons appear corresponding to the
