Same problem here on my Asus EeePC 1015px on Ubuntu Mate 16.04.1.
After a clean O.S installation the speakers worked for few days, but today I 
found that I got this issue also.
I can confirm that using headphones the sound is properly reproduced.
The operating system has all the updates available to 2016/11/06 installed.

Another strange thing I noticed is that the alert volume bar keeps
returning at lowest position at every reboot, no matter if I pull it up;
please check the attached image.

I also booted a live Ubuntu Mate 16.04.1 (from the usb flash disk I used
to install the O.S few days ago) and I'm still unable to play sound from
speakers.

  No sound with Ubuntu 16.04

Bug description:
  After a fresh install of Ubuntu 16.04.1 on an LG S1 Express Dual
  laptop there was no sound from the speakers unless external speakers
  where hooked to the headphones socket. This applies to the Ubuntu
  Mate, Xubuntu and Lubuntu variants. This laptop was working fine for
  all previous releases up to 14.04.
