Same problem here on my Asus EeePC 1015px on Ubuntu Mate 16.04.1. After a clean O.S installation the speakers worked for few days, but today I found that I got this issue also. I can confirm that using headphones the sound is properly reproduced. The operating system has all the updates available to 2016/11/06 installed.
Another strange thing I noticed is that the alert volume bar keeps returning at lowest position at every reboot, no matter if I pull it up; please check the attached image. I also booted a live Ubuntu Mate 16.04.1 (from the usb flash disk I used to install the O.S few days ago) and I'm still unable to play sound from speakers. Here's all entries I found in syslog after boot regarding the audio subsystem: Nov 6 14:30:05 ubuntu-mate kernel: [ 55.525107] snd_hda_codec_realtek hdaudioC0D0: autoconfig for ALC269VB: line_outs=1 (0x14/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0) type:speaker Nov 6 14:30:05 ubuntu-mate kernel: [ 55.525125] snd_hda_codec_realtek hdaudioC0D0: speaker_outs=0 (0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0) Nov 6 14:30:05 ubuntu-mate kernel: [ 55.525137] snd_hda_codec_realtek hdaudioC0D0: hp_outs=1 (0x1a/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0) Nov 6 14:30:05 ubuntu-mate kernel: [ 55.525145] snd_hda_codec_realtek hdaudioC0D0: mono: mono_out=0x0 Nov 6 14:30:05 ubuntu-mate kernel: [ 55.525154] snd_hda_codec_realtek hdaudioC0D0: inputs: Nov 6 14:30:05 ubuntu-mate kernel: [ 55.525165] snd_hda_codec_realtek hdaudioC0D0: Mic=0x12 Nov 6 14:30:14 ubuntu-mate pulseaudio[3715]: [pulseaudio] authkey.c: Failed to open cookie file '/home/ubuntu-mate/.config/pulse/cookie': File o directory non esistente Nov 6 14:30:14 ubuntu-mate pulseaudio[3715]: [pulseaudio] authkey.c: Failed to load authentication key '/home/ubuntu-mate/.config/pulse/cookie': File o directory non esistente Nov 6 14:30:14 ubuntu-mate pulseaudio[3715]: [pulseaudio] authkey.c: Failed to open cookie file '/home/ubuntu-mate/.pulse-cookie': File o directory non esistente Nov 6 14:30:14 ubuntu-mate pulseaudio[3715]: [pulseaudio] authkey.c: Failed to load authentication key '/home/ubuntu-mate/.pulse-cookie': File o directory non esistente Nov 6 14:30:14 ubuntu-mate pulseaudio[3856]: [pulseaudio] pid.c: Daemon already running.
