Recent experiments demonstrate that the NVidia card does not get initialized on reboot at all. If powered of and turned on, it seems that the NVidia card keeps some information for some time thus reinitialization does not take place. After reinstalling the driver (after purging), the driver does not initialize the card any more. After analyzing log files it seems that when updating the color profile, garbage is written to the syslog and the update process fails. Several reboots later, the boot process continues and completes. A workaround that seems to work effectively: boot into recovery and continue the boot without any further steps.
