I have the same problem. I confirm this. Maybe it's the same bug as in

there is a patch in that thread.

  running ubuntu 16.10, uptodate.
  installed gedit-latex-plugin and enabled that in the settings menu. after 
that gedit crashes on startup. only removing the gedit-latex-plugin package 
helps.
