Are you sure you have the gstreamer plugins installed for your gstreamer version? Since you need the 1.x versions, make sure your plugins are also for that version, the 0.10.x versions will not work. FWIW: this is not an Amarok bug, but an installation mismatch of the gstreamer plugins.

I ran Amarok with the --debug command-line argument, and this is what happens when I double-click a MP3 file in the playlist: amarok: BEGIN: void Playlist::Actions::play(const QModelIndex&) amarok: BEGIN: void Playlist::Actions::play(quint64, bool) amarok: BEGIN: void EngineController::play(Meta::TrackPtr, uint, bool) amarok: BEGIN: void EngineController::stop(bool, bool) amarok: END__: void EngineController::stop(bool, bool) [Took: 0s] amarok: [EngineController] play: bounded is QObject(0x0) current "Crystalised (Epicleptic remix)" amarok: [EngineController] Just a normal, boring track... :-P amarok: BEGIN: void EngineController::playUrl(const KUrl&, uint, bool) amarok: [EngineController] URL: KUrl("redacted path to MP3 file") "redacted path to MP3 file" amarok: [EngineController] Offset: 0 amarok: END__: void EngineController::playUrl(const KUrl&, uint, bool) [Took: 0s] amarok: END__: void EngineController::play(Meta::TrackPtr, uint, bool) [Took: 0s] amarok: END__: void Playlist::Actions::play(quint64, bool) [Took: 0s] amarok: END__: void Playlist::Actions::play(const QModelIndex&) [Took: 0s] amarok: END__: void Playlist::PrettyListView::trackActivated(const QModelIndex&) [Took: 0s] amarok: [EngineController] slotTrackLengthChanged( -1 ) amarok: BEGIN: void ProgressWidget::redrawBookmarks(const QString*) amarok: END__: void ProgressWidget::redrawBookmarks(const QString*) [Took: 0s] Calling appendChild() on a null node does nothing. I can play Ogg files without any problems, as I realized when I deleted my Amarok configuration and restarted it -- the default playlist contains a sample track in Ogg format.
