For me none of these fixes worked.
In my case alsa switched the speaker volume with the headphone volume.
If turned the headphone volume up, the speakers worked.
If i plug in headphones they will work as they always did. 
When i pull them out it'll be back to being muted until i turn up the headphone 
volume again.

  No sound with Ubuntu 16.04

Bug description:
  After a fresh install of Ubuntu 16.04.1 on an LG S1 Express Dual
  laptop there was no sound from the speakers unless external speakers
  where hooked to the headphones socket. This applies to the Ubuntu
  Mate, Xubuntu and Lubuntu variants. This laptop was working fine for
  all previous releases up to 14.04.
