gdm3 runs using Wayland by default. If it can't run Wayland, then it hides the GNOME on Wayland session. That implies to me that it is required for the login greeter to run Wayland?

If I 'dpkg-reconfigure -plow lightdm' and choose 'gdm3', then stop light and start gdm3, then I can login to a wayland gnome3 desktop.
