These apps work in Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 LTS using GNOME on Wayland. I
don't think there's really any support for GNOME on Wayland before that
version.

Bug description:
On Precise, when GTK is rebuilt with the Wayland backend enabled,
gnomine and mahjongg do not work with Wayland.
The maintainer of those packages suggests this is a problem with vala,
which they were recently ported to.
The error they give is:
(mahjongg:13452): Gdk-ERROR **: Unsupported GDK backend: wayland
(gnomine:14033): Gdk-ERROR **: Unsupported GDK backend: wayland
