1) Did this issue start happening after an update, or has it always not worked 
with Simple Scan?
2) Is the problem reproducible when connecting to the scanner via WiFi and USB?
3) To see if this is already resolved in Ubuntu, could you please test 
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ and advise to the results?
