Possible Reason:
----------------

See Mate issue here: https://github.com/mate-desktop/caja/issues/575

Upstream bug: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=768415

>From that issue, "Beginning with the various GdkDrawingContext changes
to GTK during the 3.21.2 cycle, the desktop background in
Caja/Nautilus/Nemo has become "persistant" with a failure to redraw and
"erase" when any icon is moved.

How mate fixed it:
------------------
1) Patching msd: https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-settings-daemon/pull/157
2) Patching caja: https://github.com/mate-desktop/caja/pull/602

While it may not present a problem for shell (as shell will draw the
desktop and nautilus will draw the icons on it), it is still a issue for
any non mutter session.
